These samples were found in the vicinity of the Franconia H5 strewn field. Reportedly hundreds of pieces from this fall, the majority of which are under 1 g, have been found by a number of meteorite hunters as well.

The total known weight of SAW 005 is estmated in the 1 kg range with the largest known piece weighing 43.7 grams.

It is thought that these meteorites formed when the H chondrite parent body encountered an impact that melted the iron and sulfides. This has led to the proposal of terms such as sulfide-iron meteorites and impact melt irons. SAW 005 is the only H-metal meteorite outside of Antarctica and one of only five in the world.
